Background
Born in Wiessbaden, Germany in 1973, Gary Herd was the child of David and Rosemary Herd with
an older brother Thomas. Before Gary turned 2, the Air Force shipped his family to Abiliene, Texas
where he was to stay until the age of twelve. After his parents divorced, his mother moved with the
boys back to South Portland, Maine where the inspirations and creative influences came to life. In
1992 he moved from Portland, Maine to beautiful Portland, Oregon and found the scenery and
landscapes so similar to those of the southern coast of Maine, that he now bases his talent in this
beautiful city.
Gary started as an enthusiastic high school student willing to learn all that he could about the
different mediums used in art. He went on to study aspects of Graphic Design, and now chooses to
paint in watercolor as an expressive hobbie. The depths of his talent also include; pencil, pastels, oils
and acrylic paint.
As a result of spending time in Maine, Gary was very inspired by the ocean, the cliff-like rocks, and
the many forms of sea life that thrive on the eastern shores. Gary visited Hawaii for the first time
and discovered a whole new world and a whole new passion for the abundant nature of the ocean.
Part of his insparations came not only from this new scenery, but also from the Wyland galleries
that he had visited in both Oregon and Hawaii. You will see a very whimsical touch in every piece of
his artwork that reflects the artist's personality, yet at the same time displays a serious appreciation
for his subject matter. Gary's other works includes several nudes and he continues to paint these
beautiful portraits while exploring other aspects of the art world.
